Machined by Mica-Tron, glass bonded mica components will be carried aboard Juno spacecraft.
To help scientists understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter, NASA’s Juno spacecraft is slated to launch aboard an Atlas V-551 rocket from Cape Canaveral in August 2011, and the spacecraft is expected to reach Jupiter in 2016. The Juno mission is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Dr. Scott Bolton of Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX, is Principal Investigator of the Juno mission.
Due to Mica-Tron’s experience and expertise in machining glass bonded mica, Southwest Research Institute has chosen Mica-Tron Products Corp. to machine critical components which will be used aboard the Juno spacecraft.
The glass bonded mica components, machined from Crystex Composites MM500 and MM800 grades of glass bonded mica, will be aboard the Juno spacecraft and will become part of the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE-Ion Instrument).

CNC Blanchard grinders
We have recently taken delivery of our second CNC Blanchard Grinder. These machines allow Mica-Tron to grind machinable ceramics, syntactic foams, composites, and advanced engineering plastics, all to exceptionally tight tolerances. If required, the CNC Blanchards are capable of 2 axis interpolation, enabling the grinding of complex shapes such as stepped flanges, tapers, radii, and parabolas. Each machine is supplied clean, filtered coolant, from stainless steel deep bed filters which were manufactured by Industrial Filter Company.
Both CNC Blanchard Grinders were custom-built for Mica-Tron Products Corp. by Gallery of Machines. These machines feature full enclosures, dry base coolant systems, and Fagor 8055 CNC controls. Fagor Automation, in collaboration with Gallery of Machines and Mica-Tron Products Corp., developed custom software which allows the machines to operate in manual, assisted manual, and fully automatic modes. The custom software allows “conversational” data entry from a setup screen, giving the operator complete control of chuck speed, grinding wheel speed, feed rate, dwell, etcetera. The Fagor 8055 CNC control allows the operator to choose to run the machine from the custom software side of the control or from the more traditional “G-code” programming side.
We've moved
