Machined by Mica-Tron, glass bonded mica components will be carried aboard Juno spacecraft.
To help scientists understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter, NASA's Juno spacecraft was launched aboard an Atlas V-551 rocket from Cape Canaveral on August 5, 2011. The spacecraft is expected to reach Jupiter in 2016. The Juno mission is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA. Dr. Scott Bolton of Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX, is Principal Investigator of the Juno mission.
Due to Mica-Tron's experience and expertise in machining glass bonded mica, Southwest Research Institute chose Mica-Tron Products Corp. to machine critical components which are used aboard the Juno spacecraft.
The glass bonded mica components, machined from Crystex Composites MM500 and MM800 grades of glass bonded mica, are part of the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE-Ion Instrument).

Completely remanufactured by F.P. Miller Co., this 11-20 Blanchard grinder was purchased to add capacity to our manual grinding department. Equipped with a Fagor DRO, external coolant tank, and an extended Z axis column which allows over 12" under the diamond wheel.
Colchester Harrison Alpha CNC3000XS
The CNC3000XS flat bed lathe can be operated as a manual lathe, or as a fully CNC lathe. Equipped with a tailstock, and eight station electric turret, this machine was specifically purchased due to the ability of running without oil contamination of sensitive materials. The 3" diameter spindle bore allows chucking large diameter rods, and the 60" center to center distance allows the turning of long shafts.
Babin/Hardinge Toolroom Lathe
Manufactured by Babin machine, this Hardinge toolroom lathe equipped with a Centroid CNC control, can be operated as a manual Hardinge HLV-H lathe, or as a full CNC lathe. This machine offers small diameter turning with a tailstock, while still retaining the sensitive feel and adjustment of the Hardinge collet closer, and tailstock.
